SIBU: Pakatan Harapan’s promise to abolish the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has won the support of the masses and resulted in Barisan Nasional being defeated in the general election.
Dudong SUPP chairman Wong Ching Yong (pic) said Barisan lost in the election as it failed to come up with an alternative to counter Pakatan’s promise to abolish GST altogether.
Wong, who is a chartered accountant, said as everybody was affected by the GST, they, as voters, chose Pakatan.
He said before the introduction of GST in 2015, the number of individual taxpayers was only 2.27 million while the number of companies paying taxes was 168,244 out of 1.2 million, which was very small.
“As a result of GST, inflation was unavoidable,” he added.
Wong said it was clear the people supported the promise by Pakatan to abolish GST.
“Before the introduction of GST, the taxation base was very small. Now that GST is being implemented, it affects everybody.
“Voters were moved by this idea, so they voted for Pakatan,” he added.
