The Finance Ministry is not planning to bring fuel and diesel under GST ambit. It has released a statement that “There is no such proposal or even formal discussion to bring petrol and diesel under GST, at least in the immediate future. There is a huge revenue implication attached to it and, even when all the states agree to it, it will take several meetings and deliberations to do so.” The officials has also informed that still today many states are not ready to move away from VAT since it is a major source of state government revenue. According to SBI Ecosurvey report, both petrol and diesel can go down to Rs 75 a litre and Rs 68 per litre respectively across India if both are brought under GST ambit.
