A senior official has said that despite pandemic, the Union Government will honor its commitment to compensate states for the shortfall in collections of goods and services tax. A part of Rs.97,000Crore shall be released immediately while balance amount in over a period to be decided by Council. The shortfall due to covid-19 will be paid as and when the cess gets extended. The FM has said in an interview that “As long as that law, GST (Compensation to States) Act, 2017, exists, I have to honour it.”
