Government is planning to pay GST compensation beyond five years. It is to be given to states using a portion of its borrowings and repaying it by collecting cess in the sixth or further subsequent years due to sharp decline in GST collections amid lockdown. According to the sources, the GST Council may explore the option again at its next meeting.
