The Centre has got an opinion to support its claim that it is not under an obligation to give compensation to sates that fail to increase collections by 14%. With this, the states are now under pressure to agree to rationalisation of GST rates by reworking slabs and raising the levy on garments and footwear. The Parliament had also rejected the proposal to pay the compensation gap out of the consolidated fund of India.
